Farmers Markets

They have been around as long as farmers. What started as small roadside stands has blossomed and evolved into gatherings of various sizes. From small towns tothe big cities, you can find merchants and farmers selling all types of goods.

Markets are very beneficial to the community as a whole. They enrich urban lifestyles and create an avenue for healthy eating and living. Dallas Farmers Market is no different.

In The Beginning

Dallas Farmers Market began in the early 1930’s. Farmers congregated near the cross-roads of South Pearl Expressway and Cadiz Street to sell produce and livestock out of their wagons. As Dallas grew and flourished, so did the Market.

In 1939 the first open air pavilion, called the Shed, was built. Here farmers set up tables for their produce and pens for their livestock.

Dallas Farmers Market Today

Today, the Shed is still there. You will still find farmers selling seasonal produce. However, you will also find so much more! People are selling organic honey; beeswax candles, potted herbs and plants, and flavored oils and vinegar. There is also warm Italian pastries, smoked brisket, roasted corn, and homemade tamales and street tacos made right there.

In 2016, there was an extensive overhaul of The Market. This artisanal vendor market and food hall is 26,000 square feet of specialty foods, artisanal cheese and meat, and shops featuring local Dallas artists. The Market also has several restaurants with both indoor and outdoor seating making it a great place to meet friends for coffee or a bite to eat.
